In what what left of Germany the citizens were suffering, major reparations enforced by the league of Nations were taking their toll on the economy and many were forced onto the streets, starving and desperate. The people of Germany were no longer the advanced race they once were. The 231st clause, also known as the guilt clause of the treaty of Versailles and were forced into saying that they had caused the war by themselves and they were responsible. This took away the confidence of the nation and depressed the people. The German speakers were divided as the Treaty says that Austria could not join with Germany. This intensified the economic crisis and separated the community. On top of the enormous reparations important land from the German empire was taken and split between the league of Nations so any trade from these countries went to the allies and Germany got nothing. Much of Germany's military power was taken away. It was only allowed 100 000 troops, and 6 battleships.
