During this five-year period, the newly formed Weimar Republic survived some serious crises. From the right and the left came putsches (revolts), assassinations, and anti-government propaganda.

The economy, already weakened by the war effort, was crippled further by the amount of reparations demanded by the Allies and the hyperinflation that Germany was suffering. And throughout, the Weimar governments were teased and accused about the 'stab in the back' in 1918 and the punishing peace treaty they had signed in 1919.
