I
feel really sorry for the soldiers that fought for each country because
there was no need for all the killings and slaughters that went on. The
men didn’t actually know what they were going into and I’m sure that
when they were there, a lot of them wished so hard they could leave.
That’s why some men did self-inflicted wounds. Like shooting themselves
in the arm or foot, or not using the waterproof substance to stop them
getting trench foot. If they did this they were shown as cowards and if
the court found out that the wound was self-inflicted, then they could be
sentenced to death.
When
the soldiers were waiting for battle on an open field, they each knew they
didn’t have much chance of surviving. The weapon which most soldiers
feared the most was the shell. It exploded a few metres above the ground
and could blast soldiers into tiny pieces. Their bodies or particles would
never be found, but their memories would still be there. With all the
machine guns and bombs, not many had a chance, and the fact that they knew
this must have been the worst part about the world war one, as well as
waiting for the attack.
