The
food in the trenches didn't help the soldiers' spirits much.
The British troops usually ate tinned beef, jam, and rock-like
biscuits. The biscuits were
so hard only a bayonet could smash them, and then they had to be boiled.
Sometimes there were eggs, potatoes, fruit, and condensed milk,
but the men never got to eat all these things at once.
Sometimes lives would be risked to bring hot soup for them.
Rum was stored in gallon-sized jars marked SRD, which probably
stood for Special Rations Distribution.
They were also called "Seldom Reaches Destination" and
"Soon Runs Dry." The
rum was only used for emergencies, like when men were freezing in a
dugout.
