I remember when my granddad (My mums dad) died very clearly. My Cousins were here in France and we had known he would die soon as he had Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons disease and had been admitted to hospital. And then, we had a phone call and he was gone. It took a while to hit me that I now only had three grandparents. When it did hit me, it hit hard. It felt like a piece of me was ripped out. I remember the day that I realised he was old, it was also the last day I ever saw him. We were at my mum’s friend’s house, we had just been mackerel fishing and were now barbequing the grand catch, granddad said how lovely everything was about four times and he didn’t quite know our names. It was quite scary. He started getting quite upset when he could no longer read or argue (his favourite things) and then when he couldn’t walk very well all he could do was sit in his chair and sleep. He had red hair which is where I get it from. I miss him lots but not as much as my grandma, she has never really recovered. She now stays at a home and misses him lots. |
