The Norman Conquest of England - Taking and controlling the land.

As well as reading your textbook carefully, you should also make use of Mr Field's excellent website normanconquest.co.uk which explains very clearly how the Normans had to fight to control England.

Questions

  1. What is a 'rebellion'?
  2. Give an example of a rebellion that occurred in England after 1066. How did William deal with it?
  3. Why do you think William faced so many rebellions in the years after 1066?
  1. Either draw a picture of a 'motte and bailey' castle or search for a picture of one on the Internet. Make sure the castle is carefully labelled.
  2. How did the Normans use motte and bailey castles and how did they decide where to build them?
  3. Why is it difficult for historians to know exactly what motte and bailey castles looked like?
  4. You are an Anglo-Saxon noble living near a newly built motte and bailey castle. A fellow noble in another part of the country has just written to you asking what the castle is like. Write back, carefully describing what you can see. You might also include some thoughts on why you think the castle has been built and how it is being used.
