The Power and Importance of the Medieval Church

Being a Pilgrim: An Empathy Activity

Jacob 2003

My name is Jacob and I am a pilgrim, I went on a pilgrimage to Toulouse. I am wearing the pilgrim’s uniform because it is blessed. The staff I am holding right now protects me from the devil. For self defence against wolves or human attackers. I have this scrip to store my essential belongings like food, money and documents etc.

I am wearing a broad brimmed hat to keep the sun out of my face, I started my pilgrimage in Seville.

I wanted to go on a pilgrimage because I wanted to see the world, visit a particular Saint, Saint Saturnin in Toulouse and to see relics from another country

I decided where to go because I heard Saint Sernin had the most relics in Europe and was the biggest church in Europe. So I wanted to see it my self.

Before I had left on a pilgrimage I had to pay all my debt, get money for a year.

On my journey I travelled for a week on the sea and the rest I walked.

When I was on sea I felt it was so boring, it was the most boring time I ever had in my life. I had to cope with another problem when I travelled over sea. In the boat 30 pilgrims and I all slept next to each other, most of us couldn’t sleep because just right next to us were the pigs, chickens and cows. Practically all the food and water.

When I walked it was much less boring than over sea, but I got attacked by wolves and human attackers.

I got rid off the wolves by protecting me by a stick and throwing some of the food I had with me.

The human attackers I got rid of them with saying I am a pilgrim and if you rob or kill me, you will go to hell so they didn’t.

When I past all these villages there were nice and not very nice people.

When I arrived I had problem with the language, but I met someone else, he was from Spain. He could talk French so he could translate stuff to me. So I almost understood everything.

When I arrived I saw the Saint I always wanted to meet, and I said it was one of my favourite Saints. He was quite surprised I said that, and didn’t know people from far would come to visit him.

I arrived at the church Saint Sernin and went to the relics, I saw so many relics that I never saw in my life.

I also touched some relics and brought some home with me with taking the air
