There were many inventors that helped to contribute to the cotton industry, as well as the iron and coal industry. Their machines made weaving quicker and the quality of the weaving was improved, but they also needed more power.

Samuel Greg was clever in how the mill was designed and built.

• Samuel Greg had to pay attention to where he built the mill because he needed an enormous, relatively flat plot of land to build a large factory on, and he needed somewhere where a lot of light could get through, and he also needed somewhere with a river so that his water wheel idea would work. 
• Samuel Greg needed to pay attention to the size of the mill because it needed to house a lot of spinning frames in. Also, there had to be space for workers to work in so that they could easily access the spinning wheels and be able to work freely and well in the space around them.
• Samuel Greg needed to pay attention to the shape and features of the rooms in the mill because the mill needed to house certain objects well. The windows

  needed to be very large so that enough light could come in, before the times of electric light. The rooms needed to be large and slim, to allow space for the workers, but primarily to provide enough space for the spinning wheels to be set up next to each other to “facilitate” the workers’ jobs (even if it only helped then a bit!)   Tall Chimney	The machines all needed continuous power… …and a good way of doing that was using water falling onto a water wheel, so there had to be a feature about that: a way of letting the water in to have an effect.
