After North America became independent in 1783 the Americans were free to look for new products to sell. Cotton plantations soon became very succesful. In 1793 "Eli Whitney" invented a cotton gin which helped the slaves to preopare the cotton 50 time faster than before. Imports of raw cheap cotton from Untited America into Great Britain grew.

People spent more money in the 18th century

Britain was the worlds leading trading nation in the late 18th cetury. British ships carried British goods all over the world. By the early 19th cetury cotton goods made up nearly up of all british exports
