Money
Britain was getting more and more
money from its cotton trade.
Samuel Greg's family was used to
finding new ways of making money, and it could be expected that Samuel
would engage in a trade that would be successful. he was fortunate
that he
inherited his uncle's business, a textile business, that was already doing
well.
The price of cotton at
the time was becoming cheaper because new machines could spin cotton more quickly. This meant
if Samuel's new
business used these new machines, he could also sell the cotton at a lower
price.
The demand for cotton
was huge at this period of time, and since people were selling cotton at
lower prices, the people also bought more. Not only were people
spending more money in Britain but people abroad were as well. This
increased Britain's trade, making more money and making the country
richer, which continued the cycle.
Technological
Change
Technological change is part of the reason why Quarry Bank Mill was so successful.
New technology enabled speed and quality at the same time.
Britain's trade in textiles was becoming less and less domestic because the
new machines could not fit in cottages or small workshops any longer.
The better ways of
making iron and use of cheaper coal made the new steam- driven mills much more
profitable. The new ways of making iron also improved the machines
for spinning and weaving.
The
Skill and Vision of Individuals
Another fact that
helped Quarry Bank Mill to be so successful; was Samuel himself. His
family, as we already mentioned were used to finding new ways of making
money and Samuel being a serious, hard-working, energetic man built a
successful mill with the newest technology. He was also clever
enough to build his mill near a fast flowing stream that initially powered
all the machines in the mill. Later, this abundant supply of water
could be used to make steam.
Geography
Samuel spent a whole year looking for
the perfect place to build his mill and the fact that the mill was built
near a fast flowing stream is one of the smartest thing Samuel did to make
his mill successful. If he hadn't built his mill at this location,
he would not have had the unlimited power to make all his machines work
and his mill most probably wouldn't have been nearly so successful.
