Now you may be asking yourself
why there is a page named geography in a history based website, well the
answer to that is simple. Geography (i.e. the placing and location of the
mill) was one if not the most important part of QBM's
success.
Samuel
Greg built his mill by a fast flowing stream. This meant that he could
save money by adapting his mill to be powered by
water wheels. This was useful to him as his mill got older the new
machines that he put in it were usually powered by this kind of
technology.
Another benefit of where he placed the
mill was that he could have the space to build the houses for his
workforce. Building these meant that he would be more popular with his
workforce because they had nice houses unlike other workers at their level
working for other people. This helped him make money
because he could get away with asking his workers to work a couple more
hours than others. |
