The revolutionary philosophes spread ideas of egalitarianism and anti-discrimination, that everyone is born equal, that all the nation has equal rights, that everyone can vote, that people had the right of equality before the law, that corruption was wrong , and that it doesn’t matter who you are in society, if you commit a crime, you will be tried exactly the same as everybody else. The statue of liberty in the USA was a present from the French to the USA, and symbolises the Marianne, which represents liberty, equality and fraternity. The French people began to believe that it was wrong for the king to impose his will on people, and thought more of itself as a union of people who constituted the nation together, rather than a kingdom under the power of just one ruler. The French people wished to be free from the government or the state from interfering with their lives, and began to believe that what they did was their business, and no one else’s. People began to apply reason
and logic to things, as opposed to tradition. The philosophes tried to
explain things using science and reason, and questioned the way France was run,
and the dogmatic faith in the church. The revolution spread this idea, and upset
the church. This also played an important part in the revolution.
