Iron Coal and Steam

Quarry bank mill was so successful because the use of cheaper coal and better ways of making iron soon made steam engines very profitable. Steam

Steam engines use coal to heat the engines which were full of water therefore creating steam. the pressure of that steam was used to move a piston. In 1786 a Scottish inventor named James Watt made big improvements to the design of the steam engine. he made so that it was more powerful and made it burn less fuel

Iron

in 1709 a man called abraham darby found a way of making cast iron using coke which is a sort coal. This was a major break through as iron had always been made with charcoal. By the 18th century charcoal was becoming scarce and expensive in 1784 Henry Cort invented a new way of making wrought iron in a huge coal fired furnace. So it became cheaper to make iron. Well made iron was essential for some machinery in the factories
