The Chronology of Quarry Bank Mill 

Before:   Cotton was spun to make cloth at home on spinning machines.   The textile industry was completely Domestic.
1709:  Abraham Darby found a way of making cast iron using coke, which was made from coal
1722:   Robert Hyde is born
1733: The Flying Shuttle is invented
1758 :   Samuel Greg is born. 
1764:  The Spinning Jenny is invented
1766:   James Watt makes big improvements on the steam engine.
1769:  The Water Frame is invented
1780 :   Robert Hyde (Samuel Greg's Uncle) took Samuel into Partnership for his business.  
1781: James Watt found a way to get a steam engine to turn a wheel. 
1782: Robert Hyde dies and his business goes to Samuel Greg.
1782: Samuel begins looking for property to expand his business. 
1783-1784:  Samuel Greg builds a mill near a fast-flowing stream.  
1783: The colonies are free, and form their own country, the United States.  The United States starts looking for new products to sell.   
1784:  The Mule is invented
1784: Henry Cort invented a new way of making wrought-iron in a huge coal fired furnace. 
1786: The Power Loom is invented
1793:  Eli Whitney invents the Cotton Gin.  
1800: Samuel Greg installs a steam engine to provide enough power to run the spinning machines when power is low.  
1830:   Cotton is selling so well that Samuel Greg builds new sheds for packing and sorting,  He also builds a special new warehouse for all the new raw cotton that is arriving.
1834: Samuel Greg dies, Quarry Bank Mill goes to his son Robert Greg.
1836:   Robert Greg adapts the mill buildings to house looms for weavingThe mill is now used for spinning and weaving.
1842:  A new 'scrunching' building is built.  Cotton waste is sucked out of the machinery through flues.  Iron is used for equipment and iron flooring. Iron balconies are made as precaution against fire. 
1850: Cotton becomes Britain's leading export.
