Liverpool |
Between 1710 and 1721, increased imports
of cotton led to the expansion of Liverpool’s docks. By 1791, Liverpool was a major
importer of cotton and was increasingly being used as an alternative to London.
Samuel took this into
consideration and wanted for Quarry Bank Mill to be built near the city of
Liverpool.
The Broadheath junction of the Bridgewater Canal was approximately
12 miles away from Quarry Bank Mill. This allowed easy transportation of cotton from Liverpool as far as Altringham, and then by road to Styal. |
Manchester |
When
Samuel Greg was adopted by his uncle, Robert Hyde, he lived in Manchester
for a while and he learnt about Manchester's textile
trade.
Technology
was increasing in Manchester. The new Spinning
Jenny was invented, so was the Spinning
Mule and the water frame.
This let Samuel's competitive side shine out.
