The peace treaty comes into action.
Workers in the city organised a general strike. As a result, Berlin ground to a halt. No trains or buses ran. There was no water, gas or electricity. Civil servants refused to give him money. Kapp thus had to abandon his plans. On 18 March, he and his supporters fled to sweden and the government returned to Berlin.
In March 1920 when 5,000 of the Free Corps marched into Berlin. The Government fled and they succeeded to take over Berlin. An extreme nationalist, Doctor Kapp, set himself up as head of a new government. His aim was to recover lost land lost by the treaty of Versailles, and to rebuild Germany's military strength. |
