Political

Although most Germans came to terms with the new Government fairly soon, extremists did not like it at all. From 1920 to 1924 they carried out many uprisings or "putsches" against the Government. The first one was in March 1920.

5000 Free Corps marched into Berlin and the Government fled the city. Doctor Kapp (an extreme nationalist) then set himself up as the head of a new government. What he wanted to do was regain the land taken from Germany by the Versailles Treaty and to rebuild Germany's old military strength. Kapp was defeated by the people of Berlin. Workers organised strikes against him and Berlin stopped, literally. No trains or buses ran and there was no water, gas or electricity. People refused to give him money to fund his exploits. On the 18th of March 1920 him and his supporters fled to Sweden and the Government took control once more.

After Kapp had fled the country had some workers tried to start a Communist revolution in several parts of Germany. In the Ruhr industrial area they set up a military force which they named the "Red Army". The Government sent the Free Corps to deal with them. Brutal skirmishes left around 1000 workers dead.

Economic

Economically at this period Germany was beginning to have some troubles. Although at this period, many people began to realise that the cost of reparations would destroy Germany.
