1918
Germany and Austria-Hungary were economically and militarily
exhausted after the war with the Allies. There were blockades on the
ports which made it impossible to trade and unrest among the people,
Germany felt it was time to stop fighting. |
1920
Economically at this period Germany was beginning
to have some troubles. Although at this period, many people began to
realise that the cost of reparations would destroy Germany. |
1921
The Treaty of Versailles said that Germany had to pay compensation
to the Allies. The cost of repairing the damage done to the Allies would
come up to 132, 000 million gold marks which is about £112, 000
million. The German Government paid the first installment of this
massive price in 1921. |
1922
In 1922 the German Government announced to the world that they
couldn't pay the reparations for the next three years. They decided to
take what they were owed by force. |
1923
Because the workers in the Ruhr region weren't
working and the Government still had to pay them, something called
"Hyperinflation" came about where the government had to force
up the price of goods in order to keep afloat. |
