Up till now there were political uprisings that ended up with people dead and small economic disasters. However this year would be worse. Surely worse than anything before... The Treaty of Versailles: This was the real test for Germany, in The Treaty of Versailles they had been through a lot. They had been made to accept the war guilt clause, lost their land and money to it. However the year of 1921 was the start of payment and how much was expected to pay. In total the Germans were expected to pay £6,600 million for their actions.. In The Treaty Germany was expected to pay 132, 000 million gold marks over the course of how ever many years. This was the first year that Germany made their payment to the winning allies. Political differences: The government used the Free Corps to destroy the risings in the Ruhr when all had been settled they were informed they weren't needed. The members of the Free Corps would now have to take things into their own hands. A few now ex-members formed murder squads to carry on the fight against socialists and communists. The murder squads started their newly self appointed jobs. Economic disasters: As this year was the first payment to the winning allies this was sure to cause economical problems for Germany and especially their people. Maybe a raise in taxes? Making some people starve even more and working harder to afford a daily meal. In 1921 inflation struck again as the price of bread in Berlin increased to 3.90 German marks. It had increased by 3.36 German marks in 2-3 years. As the first payment to the winning allies of the war is paid out the government prints more money in order to pay. Hyperinflation will come of this. Making money worth virtually nothing. |
