Music in the 1920s had taken a new turn. It had many influences coming from many places. Jazz, boxing Charlie Chaplin and cinema were all part of German culture, like in the USA. The new generation was ready to call it the jazz age. The Charleston, Cabaret and the Chocolate Kiddies, were a hit with Berliners. Cabaret was form of entertainment that included comedy, song, dance, and theatre. It was usually preformed in a restaurant or a nightclub.

Expressionism was in paintings and poetry. It was defined as a mode of literary or visual art, which an extreme reaction against realism or naturalism presents the intensity of personal moods, ideas, and emotions. Authors moved away from the traditional style. New novels were about urban life and misery. Some novels were written on sexual themes and some on social comment. A famous novel was All Quiet on the Westerns Front, was written by Erich Maria Remarque. It was turned into a movie.
