Europe and the Spanish Civil War > Home Front
This will be one of the two core sections of the website, that along with the Soldiers section, deals with how the Spanish Civil War directly affected the lives of Europeans. Here we will deal with the experiences of those away from the battlefield. We will reconstruct the debates in the newspapers and the arguments of the politicians who both supported and opposed non-intervention in Spain. We will examine the reaction of the artists: poets, painters and novelists, who found it essential to politicize their work as a reaction to Spain. But above all, the focus will be on the grass roots response to Spain: the meetings, the demonstrations and the support (financial and otherwise) which the 'simple, faithful folk' from all over Europe considered duty-bound to give.
