Europe and the Spanish Civil War > Soldiers
This will be one of the two core sections of the website, that along with the Home Front section, deals with how the Spanish Civil War directly affected the lives of Europeans. Here we deal with the experiences of the men and women who made the journey to Spain to contribute to the war effort. Most were volunteers but not all. The experiences cover both Nationalist and Republican perspectives. The focus will be on empathy: understanding the motivation behind the decision to go to Spain; reliving the experience of the perilous journey (usually) across the Pyrenees; and of course, the experience of war, battle, imprisonment and the aftermath.

In this section the emphasis will be on the primary testimony of the participants. We will include extracts from the memoirs, the oral history transcripts, the photographs and artifacts of those involved.
