When
you think of geography, you think of the weather and earthquakes so on, so you
wouldn't think that this actually helped Quarry Bank Mill be successful. But
you're wrong. When I talk about
geography, i mean the place in which Quarry Bank Mill is situated.

Samuel
Greg was a very smart man. he knew that in order for his mill to function well
and be successful he'd have to build it near a strong stream. And he found just
the right place, in a little town called Styal in Wilmslow, Cheshire in England.
This was ideal because of its transportation links to nearby cities,
Liverpool and Manchester. The
strong stream would help his machines get the energy they needed to function and
move so he could spin and weave cotton. Also, where he built the mill, the land
was very flat and open meaning if needed he could expand the mill over years to
come. The mill
would also have to be near a town or city to attract workers. If not, he would
simply not have had enough, seeing how people usually didn't travel very far for
their jobs and their homes. Tallking about transport, the mill would have to be
connected to some sort of cotton somewhere. At first Samuel didn't have all the
money and technology needed to transport these things, so they would have had to
have been near the mill. |
