Why did the Allies invade Gallipoli?

Both sides were keen to open new fronts because the war was at a ‘stand still’.  If they broke open new fronts, they would have a chance to break through the enemies’ lines and open new fronts.

There had been a “stalemate” in the fighting for a few years, and the countries that were still neutral were being asked to choose a side to be on, and help attack new, enemy countries. If the sides that had already been fighting could persuade these countries, then both sides believed that these new fronts would provide the fresh chance to break through these new (and old) enemy lines.

They wanted to open new front so that Russia could get access from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean sea so that the Russians could help France to fight against Germany.
